This energy can be simply described as the heat that originates from the Earth unlike how solar energy is from the sun. It is a fact that that almost everywhere on the Earth’s surface, the thermal temperature is constant. This heat is what is pumped to either cool or heat buildings. After a cycle of usage, this heat is again stored in the Earth.

The decay of radioactive materials leads to the production of geothermal energy. The geothermal gradient allows there to be a constant flow of thermal energy in the Earth’s interior. This type of energy is the most effective, reliable and sustainable energy in the world.

How it Works and Formed

To begin with, this energy is usually produced in the interior of the Earth. Arguably, this energy can be found almost anywhere in the world. This is remarkable since it is easy to situate power stations that can pump energy from the interior of the Earth. With this mind, tapping geothermal energy is efficient and reliable, since the decay of fossil materials leads to the production of this energy. Scientifically, the amount of energy coming from the Earth’s surface contains more than 45,000 times more energy. This is why geothermal energy is more reliable than any other source.

Water is usually pumped down into the ground in areas where cracks exists. This transforms the water into steam and returns it back to the surface under high temperature. The steam is then stored in reservoirs and the rest of it used up to create more energy. This continuous process leads to the production of more geothermal energy. Areas with active or young volcanoes are preferable locations to set up stations, since young or active volcanoes have the highest temperatures. In spite of this energy, geothermal stations often require a surplus supply of water to cool the machines used to pump energy.

Despite of all the factors in play that make geothermal energy reliable, there are some pros and cons.

This energy is usually extracted from the interior of the Earth. According to research, this energy can be used for a period of up to 5 billion years. This makes geothermal energy reliable compared to other types of energy like fossil fuels which have a limited life-span.

  • They are friendly to the environment.

Geothermal energy is an environmentally friendly type of energy. This is because it is usually are formed as a result of the decay of materials in the interior of the Earth. Actually, there’s zero carbon used when it comes to its production.

  • Abundant Supply.

Geothermal energy is found in surplus. This is because it is not subjected to factors such as the sun or wind. It depends on the decay of materials within the Earth’s interior.

Some of the cons are:

Geothermal energy like any other source has its disadvantages. Some of these disadvantages are:-

  • High Initial cost.

Starting may not be easy since it is expensive to buy pumps and reservoirs where this energy is stored. However, it also needs electricity to pump the energy. On the other hand, adequate water is needed. This makes it expensive to start a geothermal energy power plant.

  • Instability of the surface.

One of the reasons why earthquakes occur is the pumping of geothermal energy. Geothermal energy usually leads to hydraulic fracturing which triggers earthquakes on a large scale.

Summary

In conclusion, geothermal energy may just be the only solution out there, due to the fact that it is reliable and renewable. As much as it may be expensive to commission a power plant, it may cost less in the long run. Therefore, I would recommend opting for geothermal energy.
